In an effort to establish true democracy and
equal rights for all Fijians, the President of the
Republic of Fiji and high chief, Ratu Epeli
Nailatikau (pictured) signed into law the dissolution of the Great Council of Chiefs on March
14, 2012.
The announcement was made by Prime
Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama,
who called the GCC a bastion of elitism and
an unnecessary relic from Fiji’s colonial past.
“The Great Council of Chiefs is a product of
our colonial past and Fiji must now focus on a
future in which all Fijians are represented on
the same basis,” he said.
Fiji Military Forces, Land Force Commander,
Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga in supporting the termination stated that Fiji’s chiefs should always
be given the respect they deserve and they will
continue to remain chiefs in their village, yavusa, mataqali and tokatoka but only now they
will have one less meeting to worry about.
