A prayer book and a special teacher caught the attention of Sister Mary Paul Hickey as a first grader. The teacher was the late Sister Evaristus Lynch, and she read from that book silently every day while the students ate lunch. From then on, Sister Mary Paul said, “I wanted to have a little black prayer book like hers.” Of course, it also helped that three relatives – a mother superior, nurse and teacher – were all Sisters of Mercy. “It seemed that the most natural place to enter was the Sisters of Mercy,” she said, which she did on Sr. Mary Corinne Cimineri Rochester Lessons taught by the Sisters of Mercy at St. John the Evangelist Grade School in the Erie Canal Village of Clyde, N.Y., gave positive direction to Sister Mary Corinne Cimineri as a first-generation Italian youngster.
