Mercy Now – September 3, 2026 Newsletter for the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Leadership message In the Gospel reading of Luke 5:1-11, we hear the call of Simon Peter, James and John. We are told, “they left everything to follow Jesus.” Their story in some way is a mirror for our own story. Human effort, no matter how much expertise and skill and experience we carry, might not be enough. Sometimes through our efforts, we find ourselves holding onto hope, knowing what we strive for might not come to fruition. Anyone who has ever fished knows the patient endurance of repetitively casting of the line, reeling in, casting out again and again while always keeping an eye on the lure. In the story of the calling of Simon Peter, we hear Jesus extend an invitation to a fisherman who is in the middle of cleaning his nets. Who among us has ever been interrupted while we worked on a task demanding our immediate attention? And yet, Peter stops his work and readies his boat so that Jesus
