Mercy Now – August 20, 2026 Newsletter for the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Leadership message You have probably noticed, as I have, that over the last several weeks we have been immersed in a parade of prophets in our daily Scripture readings: Amos, Hosea, Micah, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Elijah, and now Ezekiel. Those pesky prophets disturb the status quo and challenge the consciences of the rich and powerful! Sister Joan Chittister, OSB, writes that prophets represent “the human capacity to proclaim a new vision in the middle of human chaos. Prophets, like Ezekiel, did not speak in order to predict the future. Rather, they sought to disrupt the present, calling people to a transformation of heart and to deeper union with God’s will.” Sister Joan insists that “prophecy is not a luxury, but an essential dimension of spiritual life.”
