Mercy Now – August 13, 2026 Newsletter for the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Leadership message Years ago, I made a silent, 30-day Ignatian retreat with Father William Peters, SJ. The retreat gathered about 20 sisters for prayer and silence at our Motherhouse in Burlingame, California. I was taking a month off from my ministry of health care, and honestly, I was not thinking about 30 days of silence until I arrived at the Motherhouse. A little panic set in as it felt like I had not experienced a lot of silence recently. I was assigned one of the least desirable bedrooms at the Motherhouse. I would regret this room if the summer turned warm as there was no air circulating. Already I needed an attitude adjustment. The first evening, we received the schedule.
