A Newsletter for the Friends of the Sisters of Mercy Vol. 14 No. 2, Fall 2020 Sister Makes House Calls During the Pandemic Despite the coronavirus, family medicine physician Sister Karen Scheer, RSM, continues to visit her patients in their homes. She ministers with Holy Redeemer HouseCalls, a physician practice in Philadelphia affiliated with a Catholic healthcare provider. The practice offers ongoing medical care to patients of all ages who can’t get to the doctor’s office because of their advanced age, disability or socio-economic situation. Sister Karen accompanies patients from ages 32 to 104 with devastating illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and cancer, as well as those who live with advanced dementia or are on hospice. She dons her protective gear and, in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy during the 1918 flu pandemic, she brings Mercy, compassion and medical care to vulnerable patients, many who are isolated and fearful. “God’s grace and my s
