January 2, 2025 Leadership message January 2 is designated the feast day of Saints Basil the Great and Gregory of Nazianzus. These two bishops and doctors of the early fourth century church shared a common desire to live an ascetic and contemplative life. They were committed to assisting the poor and underprivileged in their local communities. After the death of his parents, Gregory (ca. 380 C.E.) donated his inheritance to the needy of his diocese. He eventually became known for his development of Trinitarian theology and the theology of the Holy Spirit. Basil (ca. 370 C.E.) became known as a strong supporter of the Nicene Creed. Both saints struggled with a former friend turned Roman emperor, Julian the Apostate, who rose to power and came to violently persecute Christians. Gregory insisted the Gospel would survive the flawed tragedy of rulers, such as Julian, through the persistent love and patience of Christians.
