Sr. M. Virginia Baker Pittsburgh There are at least 25 characteristics that make a good teacher, and “determination” ‒ finding a means to reach all students, no matter the challenge ‒ is just one. For 50 years, Sister M. Virginia Baker, who is celebrating 75 years as a Sister of Mercy, faced and met those challenges in nine Pittsburgh and Greensburg diocesan school assignments with students too numerous to count. She began teaching in St. Regis Chapel School, five months after entering the Pittsburgh Mercy Convent from Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in 1940. She eventually taught grades 7 and 8, determined to help students learn. A graduate of St. Mary High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Mount Mercy College (Carlow University) and a master’s at Duquesne University. Admitting that teaching was her favorite ministry, Sister Virginia served as principal at St. Elizabeth A Special Supplement to In HARMONY ubilee! J To all of our jubilarian sisters and associates
