Mercy Now – May 7, 2026 Newsletter for the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Leadership message To celebrate its 70th Anniversary, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious in the United States is offering a yearlong speaker series in 2026. In February, Elizabeth Johnson, CSJ, was interviewed and spoke about the significance of the words: “The symbol of God functions.” Her idea is that how we talk about God shapes how we view ourselves, our neighbors and God, often in hidden and unforeseen ways. Over the course of many centuries, the Hebrew people spoke of God in various ways. In Psalm 6:2 they cry, “Do not reprove me in your anger, Lord, nor punish me in your wrath.” As a sign of growth and change in their relationship with God we hear in Psalm 103:8, “Merciful and gracious is the Lord, slow to anger, abounding in mercy.”
