Mercy Now – July 9, 2026 Newsletter for the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Leadership message “This is your life, joys and sorrow mingled, one succeeding the other.” This quote, attributed to Catherine McAuley in a letter to Frances Warde in May 1841, is one we often reference. It seems to me that it is used as a reassurance in times of difficulties and, less often, as a recognition of causes for celebration. While Catherine suggests the mingling of joys and sorrows is a matter of “one succeeding the other,” is it not also true that the mingling is such that there is joy to be found and sorrow to be acknowledged within the same time? Same event? This morning, as I was reflecting on this interpretation of Catherine’s observation, an email arrived that suggested an example.
