A Licensing-Based Guide to Michigan’s AFC Categories “Group home” gets used loosely — by families comparing placement options, by investors sizing up an opportunity, by staff filling out a shift note. Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) does not use it loosely at all. Under the Adult Foster Care Facility Licensing Act, 1979 PA 218, MCL 400.701 et seq., “group home” is not a single license — it is a family of distinct license categories, each defined by resident capacity, staffing structure, and the licensee’s legal relationship to the home. Knowing which category you are operating under — or evaluating, or being surveyed against — is not academic.
