inside of your mouth.

In this practice you will observe cells of your mouth
1.
With a new toothpick, gently scrape some cheek cells from the
inside of your mouth.
2.
Spread the scrapings on a clean slide and allow to dry for a
minute or two .
3.
Dispose of the toothpick in a trash receptacle.
4.
Place a drop of methylene blue on the slide, place the slide on a
staining dish and wait for 3-4 minutes.
5.
Carefully rinse the stain off the slide using a squirt bottle.
6.
Use a paper towel to blot dry the bottom of the slide, add a drop of
water over the cheek cells and place a coverslip on top.
7.
Focus on the cheek cells using the 4x objective lens.
Switch to
the 10x, then 40x objective lens.
When changing objectives be careful to adjust only the fine focus
knob.
8.
Observe and draw a few cheek cells in your lab book.
Label the
plasma membrane and nucleus.
Record the amount of
magnification and your estimate of cell size.
