Welcome to the first instalment of a three-part series
about the 30 years of ALSO.
This is only the briefest snapshot of the organisation,
and misses out on much of the rich history and fascinating detail that has made our GLBTIQ community
such a diverse and strong force today.
In particular, it provides only brief discussion of landmark events and cannot include the many dedicated
individuals and groups that helped to form and grow
ALSO into what it is today.
Nor can it look at the major contributions made by the
many media outlets that flourished from the beginning
of the 1980s, offering connection and support for its
many readers.
The history of ALSO is similar to the history of Victoria’s queer community, in that it is made up of a myriad
of threads and events.
It has had many critics over the years, as any healthy
organisation should, but has had thousands of supporters.
