n Timmins, Falconbridge is in the
process of taking its Kidd D mine
down to 3,220 metres (10,564
feet), which will make it the deepest shaft in North America and the
deepest base metal mine in the world.
In Red Lake, Goldcorp, is sinking a
new shaft to 2,195 metres (7,200 feet)
and, in Sudbury, engineering work is
being done on Falconbridge’s Nickel
Rim project, which calls for a 1,760metre (5,774 feet) production shaft.
