FOREWORD Small cell lung cancer has been the focus of intense clinical and laboratory studies for the past decade. Not only is it an important problem by virtue of the large number of patients who are dying of this disease, it also is a superb model system in which to investigate fundamental basic science questions regarding molecular pathogen- esis, as well as clinical issues such as the role of combined modality treatment, dose intensification, and the role of new agents. It is a tumor in which there is a complex interplay between the activation of proto-oncogenes and inactivation of tumor suppressor genes. It is also a tumor that has a fascinating biology in which growth factors such as bombesin/gastrin-releasing peptide have autocrine proper- ties and also may provide novel opportunities for therapy. Combination chemotherapy and radiation therapy have been suc- cessfully combined in this disease to improve survival for patients with limited-stage small cell lung cancer. What was on
