The town was located on the Roman road that linked Vienne in the Isère department to Rome. The name Bourg Saint Maurice only dates back to the end of the 19th century. THE TOWN COMPRISES SEVERAL AREAS • T he Haut Bourg (upper town) area starts at the top of the Grande Rue and consists of the church and its bell tower, the media library cultural centre and the Place du Haut Bourg. • T he Grande Rue with its multitude of shops and original architecture: sculp- ted doorways and metalwork.
