Shelters In The Pinch I have mentioned on many occasions that my dad and his family were hillbilly’s... country folk at best. They provided for their family by hunting, trapping, and fish- ing...they “hogged” fish by hand. By the time he started raising a family he had moved up north to Peoria, Illinois, where job opportunities lured him. Now, although our household didn’t have to live off the land to eat, wild game of all sorts were common on our table. One thing he instilled in me was our heritage that included an appreciation for the outdoors. The first time we ever spent a night out in the woods is when I was 7. We were out to do a little squirrel hunting. As nightfall approached he threw up a little A-Frame Ridge Line leaf shelter. I can’t remember a lot about that particular hunt, but I do remem- ber I was impressed with our temporary shelter. Since then, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve put one of these up.
