Prisoners and Their Children What do you think of when you see this picture? A parent reading to their kids and generally spending more time with one’s family? This picture represents ideal family time, but if we are to care about all families, what can we do to support families that separated by incarceration. Incarcerating citizens for crimes is only talked about on a surface. The concerns for how much it costs and/or how someone should be put in jail. There is little talk about how it affects our culture or even the families of our country. The Story Book Project hopes to build a better relationships with families by recording a prisoner reading a book, so that the recording can be sent to their child at home. This may impact a many relationships because the Bureau of Justice states that many incarcerated citizens have families. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics in 2015 there were exactly 1.53 million prisoners held in state and federal facilities. The Bureau of Justice
