By Jay Stringer A recent investigation into un- marked graves in Somerset ceme- teries and even on SCC’s Somer- set campus prompted community members of all races to join to- gether to promote diversity. Delores Dalton is a member of the Lake Cumberland Slaves Memorial Association (LCSMA) and is currently working to raise $50,000 for a statue honoring slaves in the Lake Cumberland area. She says the board formed in order to represent where we are in terms of race relations, and espe- cially in terms of where we have been. The LCSMA has partnered with SCC to commission Profes- sor Ayokunle Odeleye to design and construct a twenty-foot memo- rial commemorating slaves who worked to build the community but were denied proper memorial. “We want to honor and give respect to those who served our community and were not recog- nized,” Dalton explained.
