It’s not unusual for educators to look for riveting and funny ways to teach Mathematics, a subject which is often perceived by students as abstruse and totally detached from reality. Among the alternative approaches which combined with the traditional didactic method proved effective are:
• Empirical approach
Instead of having the concept explained by the educator, the students are provided with the data necessary to get to the concept by themselves.
The main aim of this didactic strategy is to promote ingenuity and resourcefulness as well as active participation and collaboration among students.
• Historical approach
The students are instructed on the historical context in which mathematicians and scientists developed their theories and then asked to reproduce the line of reasoning which led them to their discoveries. The depth of the historical analysis and the difficulty of the elaboration requested depend on the educational level of the students.
