of those tablets a poem was inscribed. It was a "Hymn to Kinkasi". Kinkasi was a goddess of
alcohol for the Sumerians. The poem was, in fact, a recipe on how to brew beer.
Beer is one of the oldest beverages known to man. It has certainly changed over the years and the
beer St. Paul sells in its bars and carry-outs today is far different from that of ancient times. One
would have to believe it is much, much better.
The Americanization of beer began when it was first brewed in Virginia, in 1587. The Colonist
used corn to make their ale. In 1612, the 1st known brewery was established by Hans
Christiansen and Adrian Block in what is now Manhattan. The first brewery built outside of the 13
colonies was the French settlement of Kaskaskia, now known as Illinois. But it was the large
