The agricultural sector contributed about
10% to the total aggregate employment
rate in Mpumalanga from 2012 to 2013.
This increase brought the total to a
7,1% increase, from the 6,8% of 2012.
This was according to TD Ngwenya,
mayor of the Nkanganala District
Municipality, while addressing farmers at
the recent Mpumalanga National Emergent
Red Meat Producers’ Organisation (NerpoMP) AGM in Middelburg.
Ngwenya said recent statistics indicated
that agriculture in Mpumalanga recorded
the highest employment increase of 16 000
people from 2011 to 2013. Nkangala District
increased by 9,4% in 2012 against the
national average of 4,8%.
According to Ngwenya, despite the
increase, there was still more that needed to
be done.
He said municipalities needed to factor in
all local agricultural needs in their integrated
development plans to assist established and
new entrants in the sector to access land,
water and other services needed to grow the
industry.
