The Crocodile River’s levels were very low at the end of September. Recent rains have not guaranteed an end to drought conditions, but they have helped improve water flow in the rivers and kept cane growing. Although the water availability situation in the Crocodile and Lower Komati Catchment is still worse compared to the same time last year, the recent rains have caused a rise in dam levels. As of January 24, the Kwena Dam’s level had risen from 21 per cent to 40 per cent and the Driekoppies Dam from 20 per cent to 24, according to the Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency (IUCMA).
