Chemistry Experiment
Introduction
You must never taste or touch any substance with your hands in order to find out
if it is acidic, alkaline or neutral.
Such a procedure is very dangerous!
While observing carefully chemical substances, the chemists concluded that
certain types would change colours when in contact with acidic solutions, and others
would only change with alkaline solutions.
These substances indicate if a specific
solution is acidic, alkaline or neutral.
They are, consequently, named indicators.
IN THE CLASSROOM …
Investigating acids, alkalis and neutral substances.
Objective:
To identify the chemical property of common substances by using indicators of
acids-alkalis.
To measure the pH of a solution by using the pH sensor.
Apparatus and equipment Indicators
• Beaker
• Ph chart
• tincture of tournesol
• Test-tubes on a test-tube rack • litmus paper
• Spatula • Solution of
