Two Empires dismantled and Two superpowers established 1945 Collapse of the German Empire By the end of 1942 the German Empire was at it height controlling all European territories accept for Sweden,Switzerland, Spain and the British Isles. However from 1943 onwards it began to subside as a result of Russian offensives on the Eastern Front and Allied landings in Sicily and Italy by July 1943. In June 1944 Allied landings in Normandy France opened up a third front in Europe and from this point on the German armed forces were on the defensive and in retreat. In 1945 Germany itself was invaded and in April Hitler committed suicide and Germany surrendered in May.
