Handheld
The first handheld game made available to the public was the Mattel Auto Race back in 1976 and is
considered as the first ever all-digital handheld game but is also largely forgotten by many because
of the success of Mattel Football that would be released only a year later.
After less than 100,000
units were sold, Sears predicated that Mattel Football would not be a big seller, so they took Mattel
Football and Mattel Auto Race off the market.
But within 6 months, Sears came to realise that they
were wrong about their predictions so they re-started production and continued to sell the units,
this time reaching about 500,000 units a week by March 1978.
(Mattel Football was first released in
June 1977.
)
Next was Microvision, the first true handheld gaming system, was first released in 1979.
Microvision
gained little success due to the fact that the Microvision had a small screen and only a few games to
play on.
