Urban Planners in the Making
First and second grade students at Sloat and Lakeshore schools are working with UC Berkeley’s Center for Cities &
School as “urban designer consultants” for the City’s upcoming Urban Forest Plan.
Planning Department’s Jon Swae has
enlisted the young designers to take on the challenge of greening one of the city’s pedestrian-unfriendly and bleakest
stretches of concrete – Sloat Boulevard – in the Outer Sunset neighborhood.
“I visited the class to talk to the students about what being an urban planner is like and how my job is to work with other
people to find a way to grow, care for and maintain our urban forest,” said Jon Swae.
“I provided some background info on
the Urban Forest Plan and the need for more green in neighborhoods like the Outer Sunset – one of the most treeless
neighborhoods in the whole city.
