First of all, we must bear in mind that Synthetic Phonics is not a foreign
language teaching method.
It is a method used for teaching children to read and write in
their own mother tongue.
2.
Synthetic Phonics and Analytic Phonics
Traditionally, children were taught to read using ‘analytic phonics’.
With this
method, children start out by recognising whole words and later they analyse their
constituent parts, as in “s-un” and “cr-ab”.
.
This method teaches children to analyse a
word, taking clues from recognition of the whole word, the initial sound, and the
context.
It also uses patterns in spelling.
In synthetic phonics, individual sounds are blended to form groups of sounds,
and those groups are then blended to form complete words.
For example: the sounds /a/
/t/ can be grouped into “at”, and, with the sound /b/ then further blended to form the
word “bat”.
Children are taught the 42 sounds of English, not just the alphabet sounds.
