Why it’s kicking off everywhere - Paul Mason
Fredric Jameson, 2003, “it is easier to imagine the end of the world than it is to imagine the end of
capitalism”.
How can we explain recent world events such as the Arab Spring, the Occupy movement and the
student revolts in London? One possible explanation that the BBC’s economic editor posits in, “Why
it’s kicking off everywhere”, is that we simply know more about mechanisms of power, and are able
to draw upon the work of philosophers such as Foucault, Deleuze, Hardt and Negri to unveil power
relations.
However, much of their work could not have foreseen the advancements in
communications technology that have so rapidly established themselves in society, and it is for this
reason that we must go beyond philosophers such as Foucault.
