Background
Mac OS X now uses Unix.
In making the conversion from the old OS (operating system),
features such as Apple Talk got dropped.
Apple Talk was the way Macs communicated
continuously with each other and with devices such as laser printers.
Connection was very
easy, but it drove IT folks who were managing PC/Mac systems nuts – it required more
resources than an as needed request system would.
Since UNIX has been used, communication and other multiplatform processes have become less
of a barrier.
Apple is moving toward being enterprise ready and adds the advantages of
efficiency and security.
[Note; per Rolf, Snow Leopard made important changes under the hood, but
features stayed pretty much the same.
Lion is going to make few changes under the hood but will add
new features.
