The “ELA Soberano”: Is it Possible?
Within the defenders of the ‘Estado Libre Asociado’, the ELA, there is a group
that claims that it is possible for Puerto Rico to have its own sovereignty thus enjoying
most of the privileges of an independent country while at the same time keeping
American citizenship for island residents.
The soberanistas believe that the island can pick and choose which federal laws
and which federal agencies we like and keep those while rejecting the ones we do not
want or need.
So let’s leave the PELL Grants, Section 8, WIC and HUD housing
programs and lets kick out the Federal Courts and the FBI.
Is this really possible? Is a sovereign ELA attainable? There are many reasons
to believe that this not an attainable goal.
First of all, there is the ethical reason.
As
citizens of the United States the people of Puerto Rico can demand before Congress
equal treatment.
