A sweet crop expected

THE sugar crop this year is expected to be excellent following
a higher than average rainfall accompanied by high temperatures.
While the Recoverable Value
(RV), the measure on which the
sugar mills pay the farmers for
their cane, is still low owing to
the high moisture content in the
cane, prices are fair.
It is expected that the RV will
increase as the season progresses
and the cane moisture content
drops.
The boiler problem at the
Noodsberg Sugar Mill in the Midlands is expected to take around
six months to be repaired, but
should not impact on the cane
supply to Zululand sugar mills
as the cane is being diverted to
neighbouring mills.
At present the Amatikulu Mill
has one boiler under repairs, but
this is expected to be completed
shortly and the mill should be
running at full capacity within a
few weeks.
