Managing Editor Alex Blair was willing to go
the extra mile to make his first trip to Augusta
National Golf Club—even if it meant working
as a parking valet in the mornings and evenings
for the ClubCorp hospitality house.
UGUSTA, Ga.
—“I don’t care if it’s
Augusta National,” I thought.
“It can’t
be that good.
”
I was on a plane leaving Houston’s Bush
Intercontinental Airport on my way to my first
Masters.
I expected to be underwhelmed.
I
have heard so many people talk about
Augusta in glowing terms for as long as I
have followed golf.
Augusta National might
be the most hyped course in the world.
I’ve
heard tales of first-time patrons weeping at
the sight of it, or kneeling down and kissing
the grass.
How could a golf course not fail
to live up to that?
I arrived in Augusta later that afternoon
to work as a valet for the week.
