clubhouse at Horizon Hills CC in El Paso
one day in the mid-1960s when in walks Fat
Mickey, one of the big money guys he knew from
his Tenison Park days in Dallas.
“He walked up to me with a big smile and
said, ‘Hey, these farmers out here like to play golf,
don’t they?’”
“Yeah.

“They sure like the way you play, don’t they?”
“Yeah.
”
“They’ll bet on you, too, won’t they?”
“Yeah.
”
“You think they’d bet on you if we brought
Raymond Floyd out here to play?”
“Yeah, if we played my home course.
”
Raymond was one of the great young players
on the tour, a big, blond, good-looking kid with a
wonderful touch.
He lived in Dallas and hung out
at Tenison when he wasn’t on tour.
