Women in the remote areas of Madhya Pradesh rarely attended meetings of the Gram Sabhas (village councils), even though the Indian Constitution gives men and women an equal voice.
But women are now finding their voice, and are raising issues that concern them, a change encouraged by MPRLP. Chatarvati Bai from Bardwara village said it was only through MPRLP that she became aware of the Gram Sabha and what it did. “We benefit from attending the Gram Sabha meetings,” she says.
MPRLP works to eliminate rural poverty by empowering rural households in nine mainly tribal districts of the state. MPRLP takes a bottom-up approach, facilitating, inspiring and guiding community-driven collective and individual action to reduce poverty through Gram Sabhas (village councils).
