February 1: National Freedom Day
President Lincoln signed the Amendment
outlawing slavery on February 1,
1865. Although it was not ratified
by the states until later, this joint
House and Senate resolution later
became the 13th Amendment to the
Constitution. National Freedom Day
has been observed since 1948, when
President Truman signed a bill proclaiming this take
place. Wreath-laying at the Liberty Bell has been
a tradition on this day for many years, and some
towns celebrate with festivals. The day marks a good
opportunity for citizens to reflect on the freedoms
