Mercy Northeast n page 1 n Fall 2015 Mercy Northeast Fall 2015 | Volume 11 • Number 4 A quarterly publication of the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Associates and Companions in Mercy | Northeast Community Cathedral Mass commemorates 150 years of Mercy in Maine “Happy Anniversary!” said Bishop Robert Deeley to the Sisters of Mercy at the beginning of the 150th anniversary Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, Maine. “How wonderful to be together today to celebrate this jubilee.” The Mass on August 7 was held almost 150 years to the day since six sisters, under the direction of Mother Mary Gonzaga O’Brien, arrived in Bangor, responding to a plea from the first Bishop of Portland. Hundreds of supporters were present and the Knights of Columbus brought special pomp to the occasion with their royal capes, feathered hats and precise marching.
