JUSTICE HIGHLIGHT
Mercy Joins Catholic Climate Change Coalition
The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas recently became the newest member of the Catholic Coalition on Climate
Change.
The Coalition was launched in 2006 in the wake of the U.
S.
bishops’ pastoral letter on global climate change to
educate and activate Catholics around the issues and faith implications of climate change.
The cornerstone of
the Coalition’s work is promotion of the St.
Francis Pledge to Care for Creation and the Poor, which is a
commitment to pray, learn, assess our own contributions to climate change, act to make different choices and
advocate for Catholic principles and priorities in climate change discussions, especially as they impact those
who are poor and vulnerable.
Mercy has been involved informally in the coalition for years.
