The writing styles of Joseph Addison and Samuel Johnson greatly differ according to
James Boswell.
Boswell states that the style of Addison is underappreciated and normally
classified as “nerveless and feeble” because it doesn’t convey the passion that Johnson
does.
He then states that just because it is lacking in the strength and energy that is in
Johnson’s writing that it isn’t at all bad; he states that he writes like a gentleman.
Boswell
says that Johnson writes like a wise and accomplished companion is talking to them.
He
insinuates his very self into the work.
This in contrast to Johnson according to Boswell is that he writes like a teacher.
