Haiti is considered by many to be the poorest country in the world. In the area where we work (beyond the city of Jeremie on the southern peninsula), most families live on less than the equivalent of $300 U.S. dollars per year. These families are the descendants of slaves brought to work France's sugar and coffee plantations in the 1700's, and most have never risen above the poverty line.
