ARETHA FRANKLIN - RESPECT Today I am going to present a protest song called "Respect" by Aretha Franklin. Aretha Franklin was an American singer from the United States. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and became known as the “Queen of Soul.” The song was released in 1967. "Respect" was a huge success. It became a number one hit in the United States and is now WOMEN’S EQUALIT Y considered one of the greatest songs of all time. It also became an anthem for both the Civil Rights Movement and the feminist movement. The cause defended in this song is women’s rights and equality. Even though the song was originally written by Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin transformed transformed it into a powerful message about women demanding respect in relationships and in society. An excerpt of the lyrics that illustrates this message is : "R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me." This line clearly shows that she is demanding respect and equality. I think this is a very good protest song because
