The Visconti Castle facing the Olona Valley The castle is situated on the ridge overlooking the Olona River and it has always had an important strategic role. The Olona River flows beneath it. Looking at the Castle, next to it there are the stables and the secondary entrance, and on the ground floor there is the Council Chamber which was the room of the men-at-arms in the past. Looking at the Valley, to the left there is the Manigunda’s Spring and the church of Bergoro while to the right you can go towards Lecco and see the distant mountains. The legend of the Manigunda’s Spring According to tradition, the spring has been mentioned first in 737 A.D. The legend has it that Manigunda, a Lombard noblewoman or princess, was struck by a serious illness that disfigured her or prevented her from moving. The now famous spring healed her. In thanks, Manigunda had the Monastery of Santa Maria Assunta built in Cairate.
