ADVENT SEASON GUIDE SERIES SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT – PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD MAKE STRAIGHT HIS PATHS Today’s readings are a source of great comfort and strength for us. In the first reading from Isaiah, we hear, “Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs…” (Isa 40:10). We are reminded that Jesus, whose birth we anticipate, truly is the Good Shepherd. He comes to us not as a harsh judge, but as a humble, loving shepherd who guides us, cares for us, nurtures us and protects us. While comforting, our readings also challenge us to use this holy time to ready our hearts to receive Jesus. We do not wait passively, like when we stand in line – we actively anticipate our Savior’s coming and “make straight his paths.” We must ask ourselves, how can we prepare the way for the Lord – in our personal lives, with our family, in our relationship with God, with our coworkers and friends?
