WACCM4 simulates both branches of the BDC.
The deep branch and the shallow
branch with maximum upwelling located in the upper stratosphere (1 hPa~49 km)
and the lower stratosphere (100 hPa~16 km) respectively.
Maximum upwelling occurs in the summer hemisphere, specially for the deep
branch circulation (upper stratosphere) and the trend acts to increase the seasonal
asymmetries with the largest trends in the summer hemisphere.
In the lower
stratosphere the trends indicate less seasonality in the Northern Hemisphere
upwelling.
