The idea of music as a healing influence
has been around for centuries.
Music-based
interventions in health care settings were first
initiated after World War I and World War II at
veterans’ hospitals across the United States,
eventually leading to a demand for trained
therapists.
Today, there are more than 5,000
music therapists around the country who
specialize in improving the quality of life for
patients suffering from pain, anxiety, nausea
and a host of other conditions that threaten
their well-being.
A new review of the research literature by
University of Kentucky researchers provides
evidence that music therapy can be beneficial
for patients before, during and after surgery
and may reduce their pain and recovery time.
