The first CVS store was founded in Massachusetts in 1963, selling only health and beauty products. The letters originally stood for “Customer Value Stores.” However, former CEO Tom Ryan has changed its meaning to “Convenience, Value and Service” (“CVS Pharmacy,” n.d.). In 1967, the company opened its first stores with pharmacy departments. CVS continued to grow over the years, finishing 1985 with $1 billion in annual sales, and in 1996 CVS Corporation became a standalone company, publically traded on the New York Stock Exchange (CVS Health, n.d.-a).
