1 reporter 28 June 2012, Issue 3 reporter hree thousand five hundred undergraduate students will gather with their families, friends, and professors in Erbil’s largest stadium to celebrate the 31st Graduation Ceremony of Salahaddin University. Salahaddin University, with more than 22,000 students, is the oldest and largest university in the Kurdistan Region. A full-time faculty of over 1,600 professors serves the students yearly, while a staff of 3,000 employees supports them. During the 1980’s, this university had an important role in the political activities of the Kurdish liberation movement. Students and staff organized huge demonstrations against the dictatorship and running secret anti-Saddam organizations. For this activism, Salahaddin University’s scholastic members were subjected to violence, with hundreds arrested, killed, and sent to Southern universities.
