What were the causes and consequences of
the Industrial Revolution c17501900?
This is a diagram of Boulton and Watt’s steam engine from 1782. Using cogs and gears they turned the
up and down movement into rotary motion. This invention meant that the water wheel could be replaced
as the main source of power and the steam engine could be used to power the machinery in the new
factories. By 1820 all new factories were built to run on steam power alone.
