By Elizabeth Walsh The Shorthorn staff In 2000, a group of UTA students decided to bring an 18-year-old event to campus as a way to unite the university and the city surrounding it. Fifteen years later, The Big Event has grown to be one of the largest volunteering events on campus. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and will have 957 volunteers at more than 40 sites across the Metroplex, according to The Big Event website. One of the sites will be Mission Arlington, a nonprofit organization next to the university. Saturday, more than 150 students will be volunteering at the organization. Mission Arlington director Tillie Burgin said UTA students have been volunteering at Mission Arlington for years. She said the groups will likely be working to organize food, clothing and other necessities.
