By Amanda Patterson SCC is slated to become a “tobacco free institution” on March 16, 2015. The college’s Leadership Team voted on November 11 to amend the start date for the initiative to the Monday following spring break. Previously, the panel had voted to begin the new policy on January 1 but moved the date to offer more time for promotion and preparation. The measure effectively bans the use of all tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, and oral tobacco, on all SCC properties, including buildings, parking lots, and college-owned vehicles. The policy also prohibits the use of vapor-emitting electronic cigarettes. “The health and well-being of our college community is the motivating factor in initiating this policy,” said Dr. Jo Marshall, SCC President. The college is following Governor Steve Beshears’ lead on this issue.
